Improved Iterative Channel Estimation and Turbo Decoding Over Flat-Fading Channels

چکیده
In this paper, we discuss the influence of imperfect Wiener channel estimation on performance and dynamics of a turbo decoder using the non-linear soft data feedback. We show that the correlation between the channel estimates and soft bits produced in subsequent iterations can lock the turbo decoder in a wrong minimum and create a high error floor. This problem can be circumvented by a different way of estimating code symbols used to improve the synchronization of the signal. An enhanced version of the channel estimator using Wiener filtering of the initial pilot symbols, followed by a modified Viterbi decoder and turbo decoder is shown to improve the system’s performance by around 0.5 dB in the waterfall region and to considerably lower the error floor.

Abstract— This paper addresses the design and performance evaluation with respect to capacity of M-PSK turbo-coded systems operating in frequency-flat, time-selective Rayleigh fading. The receiver jointly performs channel estimation and turbo decoding, allowing the two processes to benefit from each other. To this end, we introduce a suitable Markov model with a finite number of states, designe...

متن کاملPilot Symbol Assisted Turbo Equalization over a Frequency Selective Rayleigh Fading Channel
A novel pilot-based channel estimation scheme is proposed for frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels which works in conjunction with the existing paradigm of turbo-equalization. The iterative nature of the channel estimation technique provides substantial gain over non-iterative methods, and makes it a suitable choice for iterative equalization and decoding. The use of pilot symbols is de...
متن کاملIterative channel estimation and decoding of pilot symbol assisted turbo codes over flat-fading channels
A method for coherently detecting and decoding turbo– coded binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signals transmitted over frequency-flat fading channels is discussed. Estimates of the complex channel gain and variance of the additive noise are derived first from known pilot symbols and an estimation filter. After each iteration of turbo decoding, the channel estimates are refined using information ...
متن کاملTurbo Decoding Performance with Iterative Channel Estimation for Multi-channel Reception in Fast Rayleigh Fading
Coherent detection of received signals is required for turbo decoding. In this paper, we combine iterative channel estimation with Turbo decoding. Two combinations are considered in this paper. One is called outer-turbo channel estimation (OTCE), in which iterative channel estimation is carried out before turbo decoding. The other is called inner-turbo channel estimation (ITCE), in which channe...
